The Oasis IN LIPU of Carloforte covers an area of 236 hectares in the western part of the island and about 7 km of coastline.
The cliffs overlooking the sea in this area are very high, forming a plateau 130 meters high with deep coves like Cala Vinagra and Cala Fico. This unique and fascinating wild environment is the breeding ground of a very rare species: the Falco della Regina (Queen's Hawk), an extraordinary bird of prey that only reproduces on the sheer cliffs of Mediterranean sea islands.
On this coast every summer, about 100 breeding pairs of falcons arrive from Madagascar to reproduce. This is an important nesting area for many other species of birds as well, such as kestrels, buzzards and the Peregrine falcon, the rare Corsican gull with its unusual coral red beak, the crested cormorant, the Sardinian warbler, the Dartford warbler, the Marmora’s warbler, the subalpine warbler and the blue rock thrush.
It is possible to admire other unique animal species typical of this territory, such as the Tyrrhenian painted frog, an amphibian with heart-shaped pupils and disc-shaped tongue, and the green whip snake, known for its yellow scales.
The area is characterized by scrubland vegetation, with low and scattered shrubs and aromatic plants. Here you may find wild Sea Fennel in bloom, and two important species endemic to Sardinia and Corsica: the Limonium greco and the Seseli of Padre Bocconi. There is also mastic (Lentischio), juniper (Ginestre), rosemary (Rosmarino), myrtle (Mirto) and Aleppo pines (Pini di Aleppo), and a real botanical rarity the native Astragalus Maritime (Astralago Marittimo), which we have chosen as the symbol of our logo.

Tabarkinois spoken by more than 85% of the inhabitants of Carloforte, but it is not recognized as a "language" by the Italian law that protects minority languages. Luckily, Tabarkino does not need protection. Ancient and unusual, impossible to hear spoken anywhere else in the world apart from the neighboring town of Calasetta, Tabarkino is a language similar to that in use among the Pegliesi settlers of the sixteenth century, ancestors of people from Carloforte, with some Arabic, Sicilian and French influence.
